Giuseppe Tucci

Quando ho cominciato questo blog ho pensato che appartenere alla stessa linea di pensiero del mio maestro ed essere stata allieva dei suoi allievi poteva essere uno svantaggio, specie per ricostruire la storia di un personaggio così singolare come lui, che ha influenzato non solo la sua epoca, ma ha formato intere generazioni di studiosi. Non avrei potuto essere imparziale.

Poi mi sono resa conto che tutto questo poteva costituire un vantaggio: chi meglio di un insider può scoprire quello che succede dietro le quinte delle ricostruzioni ufficiali? Chi su un fatto può captare meglio le mille contrastanti voci e cogliere l’aggiustamento dalla verità?

Insomma, per scrivere la storia di un personaggio bisogna esserne estranei o, al contrario, bisogna conoscerlo bene, magari di persona? E si si conosce, si può essere imparziali?

Ed è il destino, o il frutto di qualche azione passata, il karman, come direbbe Tucci, che mi ha portato qui?

Una cosa è certa: questo percorso alla scoperta del Maestro mi ha dato molta gioia. E' lui che mi ha ispirato per cominciare le riviste di Asiatica, nel 1995, cose antiche con mezzi, allora, nuovissimi, per conoscere l'Asia e per diffondere la cultura della conoscenza, del rispetto e dell'amore per le sue civiltà e le sue genti.

Come sapete, il Nepal ora è uno stato democratico, con un Parlamento eletto, il partito dei Maoisti che è partito di maggioranza e Pushpa Kamal Dahal, l’ex “compagno Prachanda”, che da agosto è il primo ministro. Sta attraversando un grande periodo di transizione e sta affrontando problemi che l'affliggono da oltre 150 anni.

May 20, 1998: Diritti Umani in Occidente e in Oriente: la loro diversa natura e interpetazione e difficoltà di implementazione [Human Rights in Western Countries and in Asia: Their Different Nature and Interpretation, and the Difficulty of Implementation], University of Perugia and UNICEF, Italy. The lecture, lasting 2 hours, dealt with the violation of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights in several Asian countries, and on the disagreement between this declaration and the Declaration of Asian Human Rights. The lecture also analysed the different principles underlining these two Declarations, the negation of the universal value of the rights themselves, and the difficulty in Asia of implementation of Western rights.

L'altro ieri sera sono andata a una presentazione di Mauro Lupi allo IAB forum, a Milano. Ha parlato di Content marketing e, fra le altre cose, ha detto che se un blog non va, o se un blog aziendale non può parlare dei prodotti aziendali, si cambiano i contenuti. Per esempio, chi ci scrive può parlare di sé.

Questo blog ha la sua nicchia di affezionati lettori, ma se paragonato a Orientalia4All è molto meno conosciuto. C'è poca discussione.

Mi chiedevo allora se non sarebbe il caso di diversificare i post, mettere meno documenti e citazioni, per esempio.

Questo è il blog di Enrica Garzilli, specialista di indologia e di studi asiatici.

Mi sono laureata in sanscrito all’università di Roma La Sapienza con Raniero Gnoli, allievo di Giuseppe Tucci, il più grande esploratore italiano dell’Asia e studioso di fama internazionale. Ho studiato con altri suoi allievi quali Mario Bussagli e Luciano Petech.

Nel 1987-1990 sono stati pubblicati i miei primi articoli sulla legge indiana tradizionale e coloniale inerente alle donne (strīdharma) e le fonti del diritto induista (due negli Annali della Facoltà di Lettere e Filosofia della Università degli Studi di Perugia: Studi Classici e uno nella rivista Sinistra Europea)

Ho vinto una borsa di ricerca nell’ambito del Programma per gli Scambi culturali fra il Ministero degli Affari Esteri e il Governo indiano e sono stata per due anni alla University of Delhi come Research Affiliate (1988-1990). Il mio maestro e supervisor è stato Nityanand Sharma, specialista di Dharma (legge induista) e di poetica e presidente del PGDAV College.

Nel 1989 ho pubblicato il mio primo libro, Lo Spandasaṃdoha di Kṣemarāja, l’edizione critica e traduzione di un testo filosofico in sanscrito del XII secolo mai tradotto prima.

Ho conseguito un Master in Informatica per le scienze umanistiche, in cui ho imparato anche dei rudimenti di LISP e ho svolto 150 ore di pratica su mainframe IBM; successivamente ho conseguito un Master nell’Insegnamento della storia italiana per stranieri. In quest'ultimo insegnavano, fra gli altri, Giovanni Pugliese Carratelli e Jacques Le Goff.

Dal 1991 all'agosto 1996 ho insegnato alla Harvard University, sono stata Senior Fellow al Center for the Study of World Religions, Lecturer al Department of Sanskrit and Indian Studies ed Editor-in-Chief della Harvard Oriental Series, Opera Minora, che ho inaugurato con il volume Translating, Translations, Translators: From India to the West.

Fino al 2004 sono tornata ogni estate a Harvard per collaborare con il mio ex direttore di dipartimento, Michael Witzel, e insegnare sanscrito.

Ho frequentato le lezioni di Diritto internazionale e Diritti umani della Harvard Law School e sono stata chiamata come Visiting Researcher (1994-1996). Ho avuto come maestro anche l’avvocato William P. Homans, paladino dei diritti civili e primo oppositore della guerra del Vietnam.

Nel 1995 ho aperto le prime riviste accademiche online del mondo, l’International Journal of Tantric Studies e il Journal of South Asia Women Studies, di cui sono tuttora Editor-in-Chief. Nel 1997 ho fondato, insieme ad altri studiosi, un'associazione culturale senza fini di lucro per promuovere e diffondere lo studio delle culture orientali: l’Asiatica Association.

Tornata in Italia, dal 1996 e per quattro anni sono stata docente di sanscrito e materie affini (letteratura indiana, studi nepalesi, storia e diritto dell’Asia meridionale) all’Università di Perugia; nel 2000-2006 sono stata all’Università di Macerata, dove ho fatto ricerca e ho insegnato buddhismo, induismo, confucianesimo e taoismo e istituzioni dell’Asia meridionale.

Grazie agli anni trascorsi in Asia mi sono sempre più interessata a questo grande continente, ai suoi problemi attuali, alle relazioni con l'Occidente, alla sua politica, la sua storia e le sue istituzioni.

Ho scritto libri e articoli scientifici. Collaboro a diverse testate giornalistiche cartacee quali Nòva del Sole 24 ore, ioProgrammo e altre. Gli ultimi due anni li ho dedicati principalmente a terminare un volume di circa 1000 pagine su di un grande studioso, protagonista della politica culturale fascista insieme a Giovanni Gentile, e ho ricostruito i sogni di Mussolini in Asia. Il libro sarà pubblicato nella primavera del 2010 (Inshallah!).

Ora lavoro come Research Assistant di sanscrito ad Harvard University e come esperta di problemi asiatici per istituzioni pubbliche.

Il 26 luglio al cinema Umanitaria, in via San Barnaba a Milano, hanno proietteto il film Youth withotuh Youth, tradotto come Un'altra giovinezza. Se vi capita andatelo a vedere, mi raccomando.

Io l'ho visto l'anno scorso in Via Palestrina, un piccolo cinema all'antica con una saletta tenuta da due anziani coniugi cinefili che conoscevano a memoria tutte le storie dietro ai film e agli interpreti.

Questo film mi ha dato una fortissima emozione. Per me ha un significato e un gusto particolare. Infatti è una rielaborazione del romanzo rumeno di Mircea Eliade Un'altra giovinezza.

Il protagonista principale è Dominique Matei (la traduzione in inglese e l'introduzione del romanzo è stata scritta da Matei Calinescu). La cosa incredibile è che la ragazza di Dominique un certo punto (dopo aver subito uno shock!) parla in sanscrito. Chi è stato chiamato per capirla? Giuseppe Tucci, amico (nella realtà) di Eliade.

Nel film Tucci è stato definito come la maggiore autorità europea di sanscrito e di filosofia buddhista, che è vero.

E' stato anche presentato anche come il presidente dell'IsMEO, che per decreto ora rischia la chiusura (grazie Berlusconi!), che invece al tempo del film, metà-fine anni Trenta, non fu. Infatti era presidente il fondatore dell'istituto, Giovanni Gentile, fino alla sua uccisione, nell'aprile del 1944, da parte di un gruppo partigiano.

Mi ha davvero emozionato vedere nel film il mio maestro straordinariamente simile a quello in carne e ossa, stesso stile ed eleganza, solo più alto, e stessa enorme cultura.... continua

Domani, 24 agosto 2008, per la chiusura dei giochi, o dopodomani -- della data non sono assolutamente certa perché quando si deciderà sarò in vacanza per qualche giorno -- dovrebbe essere pubblicato nella pagina degli Esteri del Il Giornale un mio articolo sul significato e le ricadute internazionali dei Giochi olimpici di Beijing. Ne hanno parlato in tanti, ma non sempre approfonditamente.

Se lo leggete ditemi cosa ne pensate della mia analisi. Tucci, che tanto amò il Tibet, dopo che fu annesso dalla Cina, quando l'IsMEO stava per aprire un canale di diplomazia ufficiosa con la Repubblica popolare cinese, non incontrò neanche il Dalai Lama, quando nel 1956 venne a Roma: perché la Cina si stava già profilando come una grande potenza.

Ed ora, con l'enorme sviluppo economico che sta avendo, lo è sempre di più.

Vi ricordate che oggi è giovedì e dovete comprare il Sole 24 Ore, vero? Ché nell'inserto Nòva c'è un mio articolo su di un blog di fotogiornalismo stupendo di The Boston Globe.

Sarebbe bello poter usare qualcuna delle migliaia di foto di Tucci delle spedizioni che non sono entrate nei repertori ufficiali per realizzare qualcosa di simile!

Ecco qui, su Gandhi riproduco il post che ho scritto per il blog che ha inaugurato il secondo compleanno di Nòva, l'inserto tecnologico cartaceo del Sole 24 Ore, a cui collaboro.

Il tema che ci avevano proposto era intrigante "Ispirazione: chi sono gli ispiratori del pensiero che alimenta i cercatori di innovazione che abitano le pagine di Nòva?"

Io ho avuto diversi maestri e maestre, persone che stimo sopra tutti, fra i quali Tucci, e che mi hanno dato moltissimo, ma il mio primo pensiero è andato al Mahatma perché la sua Autobiografia, che lessi tanti anni fa, mi ha rivoluzionato la vita. E questo è il post:

LA GRANDE ANIMA DI GANDHI: GENTILE MA IN TUTTA FERMEZZA

Mahatma Gandhi (1869–1948) ha cambiato il corso della storia di miliardi di indiani, e anche il mio. Padre dell'indipendenza dell'immensa nazione, Gandhi, come sospeso in una prodigiosa ambiguità fra il mistico e il pratico, ha fatto conoscere al mondo il concetto di Satyagraha, cioè il non compromesso, l’adesione assoluta -- senza smarrimenti e senza svabature romantiche -- a un principio ritenuto fermamente valido.

Il Satyagraha si attua mediante la disobbidienza civile alla legge, lo sciopero pacifico, la sospensione di ogni attività, l’arresto della vita della nazione. Ma non fu un concetto astratto: se ne ebbe la dimostrazione nella Marcia del sale, a Dandi, in Gujrat, dove il 6 aprile 1930, violando la legge del monopolio britannico, Gandhi estrasse per primo il sale dal mare. Fu un’audacia che commosse e spinse come un fiume in piena l’India intera; e la ribellione non violenta si estese a macchia d'olio in ogni parte del paese.

L'Ahimsa o non-violenza e l’autodisciplina, la coerenza totale all’ideale del Satyagraha, cioè la resistenza passiva -- i due cardini della lotta che guidò l'India contro il colonialismo -- furono realizzati non attraverso un gelido controllo su se stesso, covando nell’animo il rancore, ma attraverso l’amore e, a livello etico, attraverso la reciproca tolleranza, un principio che fa sì che ognuno di noi accetti le differenze nel modo di pensare e di vivere dell’altro.... continua
