Ecco quello che dice in India e indiani il maestro di Tucci, Carlo Formichi, sulle necessità degli europei e sulle abitudini igieniche degli indiani o, come li chiama spesso, gli indigeni. Non si legge nel suo discorso un certo paternalismo?

Viaggiare in prima classe è una necessità per un europeo, sì perché i lunghissimi percorsi lo obbligano a passare due o tre notti in treno, sì perché si sentirebbe a disagio in mezzo agli indigeni.

Carlo Formichi, il maestro di Tucci, ci ha lasciato un resoconto dettagliato del suo soggiorno a Śāntiniketan e, parlando dell’«amico Tucci», ha dipinto il suo ex allievo e la vita che lui svolgeva nell'università del Nobel per la Letteratura Tagore (in foto):

Uscendo da casa del Poeta facevo sempre una passeggiata più o meno lunga in compagnia di qualcuno. Questo qualcuno cedette il posto al Tucci, il quale non tardò a raggiungermi nel rifugio di pace per insegnarvi lingua e letteratura italiana ed accrescere il prestigio dell’Italia e del suo Governo.... continua

Dopo tanto soffrire e tante lotte, il Nepal è diventato da circa un anno uno stato democratico e federale. La maggioranza della popolazione è composta da etnie diverse, benché la maggioranza sia induista. Tuttavia non segue regole di purezza castale particolarmente rigide ma piuttosto regole sociali definite, specie nelle zone più inaccessibili e lontane da Kathmandu (in foto).

Nella vita non c’è scelta: o si è amici o nemici. Che poi è la strada dei forti; non quella falsa cortesia che in Europa tutti avvolge come in un sudario, un conformismo senza schiettezza e senza reciproca fiducia, nella quale i rapporti si rarefanno per liquefarsi in un calderone di menzogne.

Anche Amartya Sen, nipote di un insegnante di Shantiniketan, studente di Patha Bhavan, la scuola elementare, e grande ammiratore di Tagore, nel discorso di ringraziamento alla consegna del premio Nobel, nel 1998, volle ricordare proprio il Poeta e la sua istituzione.

Parlò anche dell'incontro fra lui e Croce del 1925. Con gran dispiacere dei biografi ufficiali, che vorrebbero che l'incontro fra Tagore e Mussolini non fosse mai avvenuto, disse che ... continua

Formichi in India e Indiani racconta l'incontro di Benedetto Croce (in foto) e Tagore.

Tagore avrebbe chiesto al Duce come grande favore «il modo più spiccio di abboccarmi col grande filosofo Benedetto Croce», perché si sarebbe vergognato di lasciare l’Italia senza aver conosciuto di persona il pensatore che nelle sue opere si avvicinava tanto alle speculazioni dei filosofi indiani. I quali, a loro volta, non gli avrebbero mai perdonato «d’essere stato in Italia e di non aver visto il Croce».

Pare che il Duce immediatamente s’incaricasse di telegrafare a Croce e di far sì che il colloquio potesse aver luogo prima della partenza di Tagore. Il 14 giugno 1925 questi riuscì effettivamente a incontrarlo.

Amartya Sen, però, dice che Tagore in agosto, nonostante avesse accettato l'ospitalità di Mussolini, denunciò pubblicamente il regime con una lettera sul Manchester Guardian. In settembre da Il Popolo d'Italia Mussolini rispose:

Che ci importa? L’Italia ride di Tagore e di quelli che hanno portato fra noi quel tizio unto e insopportabile

Ho parlato di Rabindranath Tagore, il mistico poeta, il letterato, l'artista, l'educatore che fondò Shantiniketan e l'Università di Vishabharati.

A Vishvabharati, nel 1925, fu invitato a insegnare Sanscrito, dal Poeta stesso, Carlo Formichi. Questi, ospitato di tutto punto, convinse il Ministro della Pubblica Istruzione Pietro Fedele a portare Tucci per insegnare Lingua e Cultura italiana, a spese del governo, come scambio di cortesie. ... continua

The lecture, lasting 2 hours, dealt with the violation of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights in several Asian countries, and on the disagreement between this declaration and the Declaration of Asian Human Rights. The lecture also analysed the different principles underlining these two Declarations, the negation of the universal value of the rights themselves, and the difficulty in Asia of implementation of Western rights.
