Giuseppe Tucci

A proposito di libri, forse non sapete che il maestro nepalese di Giuseppe Tucci, il pandit Hem Raj Sharma, ha scritto la prima grammatica della lingua nepali.

Si intitola Candrika e ha fissato una volta per tutte le regole di una lingua che, pur essendo molto simile al sanscrito, fino ad allora era solo parlata. E l'ha anche pubblicata nella sua casa editrice, allestita al piano terra dell sua enorme casa nel cuore di Kathmandu.... continua

Da alcuni giorni non aggiorno queste mie riflessioni su Tucci e la politica culturale italiana in Asia. Infatti ho saputo dalla mia casa editrice che la data del libro di storia in preparazione, quello per cui ho ricostruito la politica culturale fascista e democristiana in Asia, è stata spostata dall'autunno agli inizi di gennaio.

Grandi fatiche per consegnare il dattiloscritto in primavera, dopo le vicissitudini (che vi racconterò, da scriverci un altro libro!) varie per trovare un editor valido, e poi questa notizia! Ma dicono che le case editrici hanno i loro tempi e, soprattutto, la loro programmazione.

Quindi, racconterò sempre la storia del nostro studioso, così essenziale per la storia della politica culturale asiatica, ma con calma, quando mi sono sbollite un po' il fastidio e la rabbia.

Il 28 maggio ero fuori Milano e purtroppo non sono potuta andare al Museo Poldi Pezzoli. Mi avevano invitata alla conferenza del ciclo Collezionismo e collezionisti tenuta da Pierfrancesco Callieri.

Callieri è professore ordinario di Archeologia e storia dell’arte dell’India e dell’Asia Centrale presso l’Università di Bologna e ha presentato la collezione di Giuseppe Tucci conservata al Museo Nazionale d’Arte Orientale Giuseppe Tucci di Roma.

La conferenza di Callieri si intitolava Giuseppe Tucci: una vita sulle vie dell’Eurasia.

L’iniziativa delle conferenze, nata da un’idea di Sergio Romano, si proponeva di devolvere il ricavato delle quote di iscrizione a sostegno della casa-museo milanese ed era organizzata in collaborazione con l’ Associazione Amici del Museo Poldi Pezzoli.

Ho appena scritto al museo e se renderà disponibile la registrazione della relazione (sempre che l'abbia fatta) la potrete scaricare su questo sito. Ovviamente, tutto il ricavato della registrazione andrà al Poldi Pezzoli. Stilerò una anche una lista delle persone che l'hanno scaricata, insieme alla somma offerta.

Quando ho cominciato questo blog ho pensato che appartenere alla stessa linea di pensiero del mio maestro ed essere stata allieva dei suoi allievi poteva essere uno svantaggio, specie per ricostruire la storia di un personaggio così singolare come lui, che ha influenzato non solo la sua epoca, ma ha formato intere generazioni di studiosi. Non avrei potuto essere imparziale.

Poi mi sono resa conto che tutto questo poteva costituire un vantaggio: chi meglio di un insider può scoprire quello che succede dietro le quinte delle ricostruzioni ufficiali? Chi su un fatto può captare meglio le mille contrastanti voci e cogliere l’aggiustamento dalla verità?

Insomma, per scrivere la storia di un personaggio bisogna esserne estranei o, al contrario, bisogna conoscerlo bene, magari di persona? E si si conosce, si può essere imparziali?

Ed è il destino, o il frutto di qualche azione passata, il karman, come direbbe Tucci, che mi ha portato qui?

Una cosa è certa: questo percorso alla scoperta del Maestro mi ha dato molta gioia. E' lui che mi ha ispirato per cominciare le riviste di Asiatica, nel 1995, cose antiche con mezzi, allora, nuovissimi, per conoscere l'Asia e per diffondere la cultura della conoscenza, del rispetto e dell'amore per le sue civiltà e le sue genti.

In tutta la sua opera Tucci ha insistito sul valore di incontrare gli altri popoli senza ammantarsi della spocchia europea. Proprio così, la mentalità che ci fa credere che noi siamo superiori a un tibetano, o un nepalese, un indiano, un pakistano, un cinese e così via.

Ma poi, quando succedono fatti come questo, io mi chiedo: tutti gli studi e le opere di Tucci sono valsi a qualcosa? Ci hanno insegnato qualcosa a livello etico o sono importanti solo per sé stessi, per il loro valore culturale, perché hanno fatto avanzare di un passo la conoscenza?

The lecture also analysed the different principles underlining these two Declarations, the negation of the universal value of the rights themselves, and the difficulty in Asia of implementation of Western rights.

E' davvero bel blog Thais blog, che parla di arte orientale ma anche di come pulire i mobili che vengono dall'Est, di aste, di calligrafia, di prelibatezze culinarie come gli scorpioni, di come riconoscere le antiche porcellane cinesi e di molto altro.

E' un blog che da ogni pagina trasuda ed emana la passione per quello che l'autore fa, cioè il mercante d'arte, il collezionista e l'imbonitore di aste.

Questa è al prima lettera del carteggio Tucci-Andreotti, che gentilmente mi ha inviato il senatore.

Il 24 settembre 1947 Tucci si decise a scrivere al sottosegretario del Consiglio dei ministri Andreotti una lettera di quattro pagine dattiloscritte per chiedere un aiuto finanziario.

Voleva partire per la missione che l'avrebbe condotto a Lhasa e oltre, in Tibet centrale, e i buoni uffici di Giustino Valmarana, l'avvocato membro dell'Assemblea costituente, che aveva gli aveva già scritto per appoggiare la richiesta di Tucci di emettere un francobollo di Stato con la dicitura «Spedizione Italiana in Tibet – 1948», non avevano sortito a nulla. Così Tucci, che fu sempre un uomo deciso e pieno di iniziativa, prese in mano la situazione e scrisse personalmente al presidente:

Alla Onorevole Presidenza del Consiglio,

Signor Presidente

Il Governo di Lhasa come mi è stato a suo tempo comunicato, a mezzo del Ministero degli Affari Esteri, dal Foreign Office mi ha concesso il permesso di compiere una nuova spedizione scientifica nel territorio Tibetano.
La spedizione composta di cinque membri, partirà fra Gennaio e Febbraio e dovrà esplorare dal punto di vista storico, archeologico, linguistico, etnografico la zona di Lhasa e a S.E. di Lhasa, centro della cultura Tibetana.

Tucci aveva già riscosso un certo consenso negli ambienti politici. Il Sottosegretariato della Marina e il Sottosegretariato dell’Aviazione lo avevano già aiutato, aderendo alla sua richiesta e designando rispettivamente un ufficiale medico – Regolo Moise – e un sottufficiale fotografo – Piero Mele – da aggregare alla spedizione. Era cominciata da tempo la lunga collaborazione del Ministero della Marina con Tucci.

La spedizione è posta sotto gli auspici della Società geografica italiana.
Ho in gran parte provveduto al finanziamento della spedizione con mezzi privati, ma non sono ancora tuttavia riuscito a raggiungere la somma prevista; mi mancano almeno (nove) milioni.
Prego questa Onorevole Presidenza di concedermi tutto l’appoggio possibile e di mettermi in condizione di condurre a termine questa impresa che riafferma il prestigio della scienza Italiana.

Su Fosco Maraini, che partecipò anche lui alla spedizione, neanche un cenno. Probabilmente fu "arruolato" in seguito.

Questo è il blog di Enrica Garzilli, specialista di indologia e di studi asiatici e docente di Storia del Pakistan e dell'Afghanistan presso il Dip. di Studi Politici dell'Università degli Studi di Torino.

Mi sono laureata in sanscrito all’università di Roma La Sapienza con Raniero Gnoli, allievo di Giuseppe Tucci, il più grande esploratore italiano dell’Asia e studioso di fama internazionale. Ho studiato con altri suoi famosi allievi quali Mario Bussagli e Luciano Petech.

Nel 1987-1990 sono stati pubblicati i miei primi articoli sulla legge indiana tradizionale e coloniale inerente alle donne (strīdharma) e le fonti del diritto induista (due negli Annali della Facoltà di Lettere e Filosofia della Università degli Studi di Perugia: Studi Classici e uno nella rivista Sinistra Europea)

Ho vinto una borsa di ricerca nell’ambito del Programma per gli Scambi culturali fra il Ministero degli Affari Esteri e il Governo indiano e sono stata per due anni alla University of Delhi come Research Affiliate (1988-1990). Il mio maestro e supervisor è stato Nityanand Sharma, specialista di Dharma (legge induista) e di poetica e presidente del PGDAV College.

Nel 1989 ho pubblicato il mio primo libro, Lo Spandasaṃdoha di Kṣemarāja, l’edizione critica e traduzione di un testo filosofico in sanscrito del XII secolo mai tradotto prima.

Ho conseguito un Master in Informatica per le scienze umanistiche, in cui ho imparato anche dei rudimenti di LISP e ho svolto 150 ore di pratica su mainframe IBM; successivamente ho conseguito un Master nell’Insegnamento della storia italiana per stranieri. In quest'ultimo insegnavano, fra gli altri, Giovanni Pugliese Carratelli e Jacques Le Goff.

Dal 1991 all'agosto 1996 ho insegnato alla Harvard University, sono stata Senior Fellow al Center for the Study of World Religions, Lecturer al Department of Sanskrit and Indian Studies ed Editor-in-Chief della Harvard Oriental Series, Opera Minora, che ho inaugurato con il volume Translating, Translations, Translators: From India to the West.

Fino al 2004 sono tornata ogni estate a Harvard per collaborare con il mio ex direttore di dipartimento, Michael Witzel, e insegnare sanscrito.

Ho frequentato le lezioni di Diritto internazionale e Diritti umani della Harvard Law School e sono stata chiamata come Visiting Researcher (1994-1996). Ho avuto come maestro anche l’avvocato William P. Homans, paladino dei diritti civili e primo oppositore della guerra del Vietnam.

Nel 1995 ho aperto le prime riviste accademiche online del mondo, l’International Journal of Tantric Studies e il Journal of South Asia Women Studies, di cui sono tuttora Editor-in-Chief. Nel 1997 ho fondato, insieme ad altri studiosi, un'associazione culturale senza fini di lucro per promuovere e diffondere lo studio delle culture orientali: l’Asiatica Association.

Tornata in Italia, dal 1996 e per quattro anni sono stata docente di sanscrito e materie affini (letteratura indiana, studi nepalesi, storia e diritto dell’Asia meridionale) all’Università di Perugia; nel 2000-2006 sono stata all’Università di Macerata, dove ho fatto ricerca e ho insegnato buddhismo, induismo, confucianesimo e taoismo e istituzioni dell’Asia meridionale.

Grazie agli anni trascorsi in Asia mi sono sempre più interessata a questo grande continente, ai suoi problemi attuali, alle relazioni con l'Occidente, alla sua politica, la sua storia e le sue istituzioni.

Ho scritto libri e articoli scientifici. Collaboro a diverse testate giornalistiche cartacee quali Limes, ISPI - Istituto per gli Studi di Politica Internazionale, Nòva del Sole 24 ore, ioProgrammo e altre. Gli ultimi due anni li ho dedicati principalmente a terminare un volume di circa 1000 pagine su di un grande studioso, protagonista della politica culturale fascista insieme a Giovanni Gentile, e ho ricostruito i sogni di Mussolini in Asia. Il libro sarà pubblicato nella primavera del 2011 (Inshallah!).

Oltre che docente, lavoro come Research Assistant di sanscrito ad Harvard University e come esperta di problemi asiatici per istituzioni pubbliche.
